Calculating Fuel Economy
The easiest way to calculate how much fuel you use travelling a certain distance is to fill up your tank write down the miles from your odometer. Next, fill up, look again at your odometer and subtract the first odometer reading from the second one. This calculation will give you the distance travelled by car between fill-ups. This also will give you the miles per gallon amount. The second fill-up can be any time after the starting one, but if you are trying to figure out how many miles per gallon, wait with your next fill-up till your tank is closer to being empty for a more accurate result.
Now, in order to know how much fuel savings you can get from using MPG+, the first thing you have to do is to get your data without using MPG+. Then use MPG+ and repeat the exercise.
- Make sure you have your odometer reading at first fill, the amount in dollars and the gas price per gallon.
- Then when almost empty, fill up your tank again and get the odometer reading and the amount in dollars and keep this data in your records.
Use MPG+ and repeat the exercise. Now you will have two records. One without MPG+ and another with MPG+. If you already have these records, please use the following form to calculate your Return On Investment (ROI).
